
Stop Buying IR Tubes by Part Number
Ordering a short-wave infrared heating tube based on a part number is basically a gamble. We see it all the time. A buyer calls us for a 230V, 2000W quartz tube with R7s connectors because that’s what the old manual says. But here’s the thing: that manual doesn’t know your machine has five years of wear and tear. It doesn’t know you’ve sped up your production line. Trying to force a “perfect match” on paper usually leads to a headache on the floor.
The messy reality of power
Short-wave IR tubes are high-energy beasts. If you pick a wattage that your power supply can’t actually handle, you’re just waiting for a breaker to trip or a filament to burn out. On the flip side, under-specing is just as bad. You’ll end up with cold spots in your material and cycle times that drag on forever. We always start with your voltage stability. A 400V system can pump out massive heat, but it puts a huge strain on your wiring. If your cables aren’t up to the task, you’ll get a voltage drop. And when that happens, your efficiency just vanishes.
Quartz, coatings, and the “catch”
We use high-purity quartz because it can take the thermal shock without cracking. Sometimes, you need a coated tube to change how the heat hits the material. It sounds great—and it helps a lot with certain plastics—but there’s a trade-off. Those coatings can flake off if your machine vibrates too much or if someone cleans them too aggressively. That’s why we ask to see your mounting brackets. We want to make sure the tube isn’t getting rattled to death by machine harmonics.
Why “drop-in replacements” are a myth
Replacing a part rarely fixes a deeper problem. We’d much rather come to your shop and actually see the thermal footprint in person. We check the gap between the tube and the workpiece. It sounds trivial, but if that distance is off by even 10mm, the radiation intensity tanks. Your PET blowing or curing process just fails. We aren’t just shipping you glass and wire. We want to make sure your cooling system can actually handle the ambient heat these lamps throw off. Otherwise, you’re just trading one problem for another.
