
Keeping People Warm in Wet Zones (Without Burning the House Down)
Changing rooms and wet areas are a nightmare to heat. You need warmth—and you need it right now—but you’re dealing with steam, splashes, and a lot of moisture. If you just throw a standard heater in there, you’re asking for a short circuit. That’s why we lean on shortwave infrared (SWIR) and IPX4-rated housings. It’s the only way to make it work.
How the heat actually works
Most heaters try to warm up the air. In a drafty changing room, that’s a losing battle because the heat just floats away. SWIR is different. It sends out electromagnetic radiation that hits skin and clothes directly. It happens instantly. Instead of wasting energy trying to warm up the entire room, you’re just warming the person standing under the lamp. It’s the difference between waiting for a room to thaw and stepping into a beam of sunlight on a cold day.Fast. Effective. Simple.
Dealing with the water
Water and electricity don’t mix. Period. To keep things safe, we use an IPX4 rating. In plain English, that means the unit can handle splashes from any direction without breaking a sweat. We seal up the internal wiring and the reflector housing so moisture can’t sneak into the terminals. Inside, there’s a quartz halogen tube. These things get incredibly hot to push out that IR spectrum, so we use high-grade reflectors to aim the beam straight down. You want the heat on the customer, not baking your ceiling beams.
A few things to watch for during install
You can usually tie these into your existing circuits, but keep an eye on the initial power draw. These lamps pull a lot of current the second they kick on. If your breakers aren’t sized for that peak load, you’ll be spending your afternoon resetting them. One last thing: IPX4 is great for splashes, but it’s not a submarine. If you’re putting these in a spot where they’ll be hit by a direct shower stream, you’ll need to step up to IPX5 or IPX6. For a standard changing area, though, IPX4 is usually the sweet spot for safety and budget.
