Ever stepped out of a shower or a changing room and felt that instant, brutal chill? It’s the worst. We decided to tackle that “cold shock” using short-wave infrared (SWIR), and honestly, it’s a total shift in how we think about heat. Most heaters try to warm up the air. That’s a waste. Air is slippery; it just moves around. Infrared is different. It sends heat straight to the things it hits—your skin, the floor tiles, the walls. That’s why you feel it the second you flip the switch. No waiting for the room to “warm up.” You just feel warm.
How it actually works
Inside these units, there’s a tungsten filament tucked into a high-purity quartz tube. When the power hits, that filament gets incredibly hot. It puts out radiation in a specific wavelength (0.76 to 2.5 $\mu$m) that just slices right through the air without losing its punch. It doesn’t bother with the air at all. It just looks for you.
The nitty-gritty on the build
We use a halogen gas fill in these lamps. Without it, the tungsten would eventually gunk up the inside of the tube, and the lamp would burn out way too fast. The halogen keeps things clean, so the heat stays consistent for a long time. Then there’s the quartz glass. We use it because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature jumps from freezing to boiling in a split second. It won’t crack under pressure. Since nobody wants to be blinded while they’re getting dressed, we usually coat the tubes. You get all the warmth, but none of the glare.
A few things to watch out for during install
Wiring these is pretty simple, but you have to be smart about where you put them. These lamps pack a massive amount of energy into a tiny space. If you use a cheap housing or put them too close to a plastic ceiling, things can get… melty. You’ve got to make sure your fixtures are rated for the heat. And a word of advice: don’t go overboard with the wattage. If you put a monster lamp in a tiny closet, it stops feeling like a cozy spa and starts feeling like an oven. It’s all about balance. Match the power to the size of the room, and you’re golden.
