
More Than Just a Warm Bathroom
Most of us think of those infrared bathroom lamps as a luxury—something to keep you from shivering while you towel off after a hot shower. But if you look at it from a maintenance perspective, these things are actually doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to keeping your bathroom from turning into a petri dish.
How it actually works
Here is the thing about standard space heaters: they try to warm up the air. The problem is that air is pretty terrible at holding onto heat. Infrared is different. It doesn’t bother with the air; it goes straight for the surfaces. It hits your walls, your floors, and your ceiling. When we use these to fight mold, we’re looking at the specific type of heat. Short and medium-wave IR actually penetrate the moisture sitting on your tiles and grout. It forces that standing water to evaporate way faster. By keeping the surfaces warm, you stop condensation from forming. And since mold needs that dampness to survive, you’ve basically just taken away its food source.
The humidity trap
But you can’t just throw the highest wattage lamp you can find in there and call it a day. If you crank the heat too high, you’ll evaporate the water so fast that the air becomes a sauna. If your vent isn’t strong enough to pull that steam out, you aren’t actually fixing the problem—you’re just moving the water from the wall into the air. The trick is to pair the heater with a timed exhaust fan. The lamp flashes the surfaces dry, and the fan dumps the humidity outside. Simple.
The boring (but important) stuff
If you’re installing these, please don’t cut corners on the wiring. Bathrooms are “wet zones,” which means you need fixtures with the right IP ratings. You want a tight seal. If steam leaks into the electrical contacts, the lamp will oxidize and burn out way sooner than it should. Also, keep an eye on your circuit load. A few 250W or 500W lamps add up quickly. You don’t want to find out your breaker can’t handle the draw on the coldest morning of January.
